Fruit of the Spirit

The Pruning Shears

John 15:2

Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

The words of our Lord in John 15 are the seventh of the revelations regarding His ‘I AM’ nature. “I am the true vine“. There were vineyards far and wide in Galilee; it was a big part of their economy as well as their diet. Jesus always used images that people could relate to. In this passage He wanted the disciples to understand that they needed to grow from Him alone in order to be productive. Everything they needed stemmed from Him and as long as they remained in Him they would bear fruit.

Sometimes we feel that we are doing the right thing, on the right path and everything is good, when all of a sudden it feels like the feet are taken from beneath you. It’s hard to understand, during those times, what went wrong. It is possible however, even likely, that you did nothing wrong. God just got the shears out and pruning can be ruthless. God sees the fruit your life is producing and knows you have so much more to give. He cuts a little back, maybe even a lot back, to encourage more growth. He wants you to flourish.

So don’t get down heartened when you feel things changing, get excited about what God has in store for you next.
