Carry God’s Word

And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life. Deuteronomy 17:19a

Once the king had written out the entire law, he was to read it all the days of his life and carry it with him into every situation. God’s word would provide the king with knowledge and wisdom for every challenge that he would face. It would keep his heart pure, for the words of the Lord are pure (Ps12:6). It would keep his path sure, for it would be a lamp to his feet.

God’s word needs to infuse every part of our being and flow through us as the lifeblood that it truly is. As the Lord commanded Joshua: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night.” We need to carry the words that are contained in God’s precious book with us at all times – in our hearts and in our minds.

The apostle Paul refers to the word of God as the sword of the Spirit, and something that we are to put on daily and carry with us. The writer to the Hebrews said:

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit.”

This is why we carry it and why the kings of old were to carry it. For this sword pierces through our sin-shell, separating that which is sinful from that which is holy. It cuts through the lies of the devil and reveals the truth of God. It convicts us when we start to go our own way instead of following his direction.

Hold God’s word close, and let it keep your heart pure and your path sure.
