A Spirit of Peace

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6

A mind that is at peace is a beautiful thing for it actually allows us the clarity to see the beauty in the things around us. Most, if not all of us, have experienced the opposite side of this; a time when the mind was at war with itself, and chaos and turmoil ruled every thought. It is soul-destroying and it is exhausting. A mind ruled by outside influences can lead to devastating consequences with some finding it unbearable to live with.

For the Christian, life can be different. The one thing that a mind in turmoil does not have, is hope, and hope is what leads us to peace. The truth, of course, is that a life of peace and a mind at peace does not come at the click of the fingers. Although our spirit has been awakened and the Spirit of God dwells within us, we are not immune to those outside influences. Each day we have to choose to set the mind on the Spirit and hand all our thoughts over to him. Turmoil and distress will still come, but instead of them swallowing us up, the Spirit walks us through them, back into the calm.

Given the choice, no-one would intentionally choose turmoil and death over life and peace and yet it is the reality of how many people live. If you have found peace, then praise God for his grace and pray earnestly that all would find it.

Living a spiritual life means handing your heart, your soul and your mind over to the governance of the Holy Spirit, which allows the peace of God to enhance the beauty of life.
