God's Love

Getting the First One Right

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Mark 12:30

Neither a glass half full or a glass half empty is of any use to God, for he does not require any kind of half measure. You are either all in or all out because anything in between just does not work. God wants you to love him with all of your heart; to love his ways with all of your soul; to love his word with all of your mind, and to love the work of his kingdom with all of your strength. None of this can be achieved with anything less than 100%.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that you can follow God’s path and your own at the same time. If you haven’t already realised, your own path isn’t even your own. “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” (Matt6:24)

God held nothing back from us and his desire is that we hold nothing back from him. In true shepherd style, He goes before us in everything to show us the way. In showing us how to love, the apostle John says, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”

The wonder of this led John to conclude that “we love because he first loved us.

The only way for us to commit to loving Him fully, is through the experience of him fully loving us. For how do we show the incredible love of God to others if we haven’t allowed that love to saturate our whole being? In getting the first and greatest command right, we can confidently achieve the second.
