And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel. Matthew 2:6
In the midst of their rebellion, their downfall and their disgrace, Israel and Judah could be given no greater hope than that of a Saviour. Set in place before the beginning of time, the Creator and Redeemer stand. The people had no idea that their Saviour would be the Son of God and they would not expect the great ruler to come from a small town like Bethlehem, even though it had been the birthplace of David. That is the way of our God, choosing that which is lowly and blessing it with greatness, honour and strength.
This message of hope continues to goes out today to every person upon the earth. There is a Saviour and he was born in Bethlehem just as the prophet Micah foretold. He is the firstborn of all creation, sent from the glory of heaven, to bring us hope, to bring us peace, and to bring us to the Father. Love truly did come down the day the Saviour was born.
The birth of Jesus was, and is, the fulfilment of God’s promise to a wayward people. He came to be both Saviour and Redeemer, and one day soon he will rule over heaven and earth and everyone will acknowledge his authority. Just as the wise men came to worship and bow down before the King, so too will every single one of us do the same.
God bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth. Philippians 2:9,10
Give thanks that God’s word always stands true. He promised a Saviour and he sent us his Son.
