Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15
Does the world entice you? Are there elements of the world that bring you pleasure? When you read the words ‘the world’, what image do you see in your mind? It can’t be the planet itself with its mountains and seas, birds and trees, for ‘God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.’ It can’t be mankind, for ‘God so loved the world that he gave his only son.’
The world that John speaks of relates to the elements which are driven by the influence and power of the ruler of this world. Satan will never give up trying to lure you into his playground. The only thing that stops us going there is the love we have for God. The deeper that love is, the deeper our commitment will be to following His will.
Does that mean that everything that is in the world is evil? No, absolutely not. The bible is very clear on a number of things that definitely are, but it does not give an exhaustive list of activities that should be avoided, or that can be enjoyed. Each believer must discern those things individually because what might be okay for one person, may cause another to stumble. As the apostle Paul said,
“For me, all things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial; I will not be enslaved by anything.”
Satan wants to enslave us; the Father wants to free us.
When we truly love God with all that we have, the desires of the flesh and the lusts of the eyes will fall away and our focus will be on pleasing the Father rather than ourselves.
