By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2:5,6
At various times throughout the gospels we hear the Lord Jesus saying, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples.” He was letting his followers know that they had not joined a secret society, but that, on the contrary, who they were should be visible to everyone. This is our outward reflection.
In this verse, John is encouraging inward reflection, that we may know that we are His disciples. This is the Christian litmus test: If we say we are born again in Christ, the results will show that we are walking in the same way in which he walked. The comparison table will show that Jesus walked in humility, with compassion and gentleness; he walked in kindness, with patience and genuine concern; he walked as light and as hope; he walked in faithfulness and in truth.
When you reflect inward, do you see compassion and kindness, tenderness and patience? Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.” He is our teacher, and the only way to reflect the ways of Jesus is to know the person of Jesus.
When we walk with Him, being yoked to Him, we will walk like Him.
