God's Word, Tuesday Truths

Sinful Condition

And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8

At the end of Genesis 2 we read of the creation of woman, which finishes in verse 25 with, “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” Adam and Eve had no shame because their condition was pure. A mere eight verses later and they are hiding themselves from the presence of the Lord. So, what changed?

Adam and his wife enjoyed the Lord’s presence for an unspecified period of time, during which God spoke to them and directed them in all truth. Then the serpent appeared and questioned that truth. Eve’s failing was in not adhering to, and trusting in, God’s sovereign word. After questioning God’s truth, the serpent turned his attention to Eve’s faith. For whatever reason, Eve had not allowed God’s word to be established in her heart, which caused her to doubt the truth of it.

God has said, “man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Deuteronomy 8:3

Death comes through disobedience to God’s word, hence the warning, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” The day that Eve and Adam ate of the tree, their spirit died and the pure connection to God was severed. Their eyes were opened and they immediately recognised their sinful condition.

Believing in the word of God, allowing it to take root in our hearts and being obedient to it, guards us against the lies of the devil and enables us to stand firm in God’s truth.
