For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.1 Timothy 2:5
For me, this is the ultimate and most important truth – there is one God. The second truth found in this verse follows directly on the heels of the first – there is only one access point to the one God. Regardless of what the world thinks or tries to convince you of, there are not ‘many paths’ that lead to God. There is one and one alone, the man Christ Jesus.
Jesus said, “I am the way”. He didn’t say ‘I am a way’ or, ‘I am one of many ways’. He is the only way, which is how he has the authority to say, “no-one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). There is no other possible way for a sinful people to be reconciled to a holy God than through the death of Jesus, and it is the desire of God the Father for all people to come to the knowledge of the truth (v4).
If we were able to achieve union with God through any other means, then the death of Jesus becomes meaningless and without purpose. This could not be further from the truth, for the world has never seen anything more meaningful than the death of Jesus Christ, son of man, Son of God.
Jesus is our mediator, arbitrator, peacemaker and advocate before Almighty God and through Christ alone we are given access to the throne room and mercy seat of the Father.
