Do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.Proverbs 3:11,12
It is often said that ‘rules are made to be broken’, although that usually comes from someone trying to justify what they’ve done. I have also heard people say that there are too many rules to follow to be a Christian; lots of dos and don’ts. God is seen as more of a dictator than a loving father and yet that is exactly where his laws come from – a heart of deep love.
Do not despise the Lord’s discipline – God’s discipline keeps us focused. Whether we appreciate discipline or not, we all need it.
Do not be weary of his reproof – God’s reproof keeps us safe. We don’t always recognise the danger of our actions or our behaviour but it can affect us and others way beyond what we can see.
We all live our lives according to laws whether we are Christians or not. Every country in the world has them and when we visit other countries, we know that we need to respect their particular rules. We show respect to God when we follow his rules and the laws of his kingdom. For the Christian, this shouldn’t feel like a chore but as an honour in pleasing the Father. He has laid out principles for us which lead to a full and abundant life filled with his love and joy. He only wants the best for us and his ways lead us into experiencing the wonder and beauty of all that he has created; all that he wanted us to have.
Do not despise or grow weary of the laws of God. They are not there to hinder or restrain you, they are there to give you freedom.
