Hope, The Prophets

Never Without Hope

Joel 2:21,22 – Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things! Fear not, you beasts of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit; the fig tree and vine give their full yield.

This verse really stood out for me when I was looking at Joel because it spoke to me for the present moment. So much has been lost over the last eighteen months by way of Covid-19. An invisible enemy that attacks without thought or prejudice; relentless in pursuit and with the ability to change itself for a new identity. An enemy that is hard to fight but not impossible. Hope is on the horizon.

The devil is also relentless in his pursuit, spreading his lies and deceit like a virus and watching as it destroys people’s lives. He is so subtle that often you don’t see him coming, slowly invading every part of an unsuspecting soul. Those without God do not see him as an enemy, in fact, some deny his very existence. Those walking with God know only too well what a powerful enemy he is; an enemy that is hard to fight but not impossible. Hope is here.

In verse 25 of Joel 2, we have those wonderful words of the Lord, “I will restore…” Our planet has had its share of devastation and the earth has been flooded, cracked apart, burned with fire and plighted by drought. The wonder of God’s creation can be seen in the new growth that appears on ground that was once destroyed. Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things! God brings new life to where it looks like there’s no hope. He breaths out life and has the power to restore what has been lost. He can cause the pastures of the wilderness to be green once again and return the trees to bear fruit and give their full yield, for there are no half measures with God.

We will have times of drought in our own lives but we are never without hope when we have the great Restorer by our side, who himself encourages us:

“Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has poured down for you abundant rain…” (v23).

So, whatever comes your way today, fear not, for the Lord has done great things and he will continue to do great things. Open your heart, your soul and your mind and receive from his bounty of goodness.
