Psalms, The Prophets

Sit By The Mountain

Psalm 99:1-3 – The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!

Do you get as excited as I do when you see connections throughout scripture? We know that David wrote a lot of the Psalms and we can link them to different periods of his life. Then there are those Psalms that don’t state an author and I often wonder who it was that penned the wonderful verses of praise that have the ability to truly lift your spirit.

When I read Psalm 99 recently, it had a familiar sound and it triggered thoughts of the prophets and I began to wonder if Joel had written it. Joel warned of the locust plague; a mighty army of the Lord. When they come, ‘The earth quakes before them; the heavens tremble. The Lord utters his voice…he who executes his word is powerful.’ Verses 4 and 5 of the Psalm says:

The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!

Joel then urged the people to return to the Lord ‘for he is gracious and merciful’. The priests wept and cried out, ‘Spare your people, O Lord.’ We go on to read that the Lord had pity on his people and he answered them. The Lord showed mercy and promised, ‘I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. You shall know that I am the Lord your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain.’ The Psalmist in verses 8 and 9 exclaims:

O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!

This exaltation of Psalm 99 could very well have been written by Joel; a song of praise for the Lord’s grace and mercy and an acknowledgement of his great and awesome power. It is also a declaration of the holiness of God – “Holy is he! Holy is he! The Lord our God is holy!”

There is so much truth packed into this short psalm – the Lord reigns over everything with justice and righteousness; He is forgiving and will answer those who cry out to him; He sits enthroned in the heavens and He is holy.

Come and sit by the mountain today and worship at his footstool.
