Acts of the Apostles, Holy Spirit

The Promised Gift

Acts 2:2 – And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

The disciples had waited for the promise of the Father as the Lord had instructed and were all together in one place when the day of Pentecost arrived. We have all felt the force of strong winds and we know what the sound of mighty rushing wind is like. Can you imagine the amplified sound of it bouncing off the walls inside your house? Like a towering rollercoaster, it would be terrifying and thrilling all at the same time.

This is God’s power, harnessed through his Spirit and dwelling inside every follower of Christ. On the occasion of Pentecost, this power was displayed through language. There were people from different countries in Jerusalem at this time – Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Asia, Egypt, Libya, Rome, Crete and Arabia – and each one of them heard the gospel in their own tongue, through the apostles. Everyone listened in amazement, wondering how this could possibly be. That’s God’s power; power to astound.

Seven weeks earlier, in a moment of human weakness, Peter had denied even knowing Jesus. Now, through God’s power, he was standing up before thousands proclaiming the gospel of his Lord.

“Men of Israel, hear these words: This Jesus…whom you crucified…God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it…know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ…repent and be baptised for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

The gift of the Holy Spirit was not reserved for the twelve alone, for the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself. This gift can turn your weakness to strength and your timidness to boldness. It allows us to stand with courage and speak with confidence of God’s love and compassion.

This is the second greatest gift you will ever receive and it comes ready-to-use. So, don’t keep it parcelled up. Open your gift and start using it today.
