John 3:7 – Do not marvel that I say unto you, ‘You must be born again.’
There are so many stories in the Bible that are fascinating but I especially like those snippets of conversations that we get to listen in on. John gives us access to one of those interactions that leads to, probably, the most well know verse in the whole Bible. The conversation takes place between Jesus and a Pharisee called Nicodemus.
Throughout the gospels we see the disappointment that Jesus feels toward these religious leaders and his description of them is often less than flattering. Like any group, though, there are always those within it that think slightly different or who are open to the ‘what-if’. Nicodemus was one of those men. He knew the scriptures and he had watched and listened to this Rabbi and… well… there was something, but could it truly be…
He had spoken to other colleagues and some, of course, had dismissed his thoughts as ludicrous but others were having the same feeling. They needed to know, so Nicodemus agreed to go and speak to Jesus personally and privately, in fact, under cover of night would be best.
When he and Jesus meet, he acknowledges that there are those among the Pharisees who have come to believe that Jesus is indeed a teacher come from God. Although this is a step in the right direction, their eyes have not yet been fully opened, as Jesus explains, “unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” First you are born in flesh, then you must be born in Spirit. Nicodemus looks bewildered and feels that for all his studying, he knows very little. Jesus then presents the truth in its most simple form.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Don’t get hung up on what you think you know and don’t let yourself get carried along with the crowd. There is always something more to learn and something new to discover. Never lose the fire within to search further and dig deeper. God’s word is full of wonderful truths just waiting to be uncovered.
