The Spirit of Life

Those who have been redeemed have entered into new life, in the Spirit, in Christ. Romans 8:2 tells us, ‘For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death’. The birth of a Saviour brought hope into a world of sin; the birth of pure innocence for a people steeped in ignorance. And the hope was this, ‘if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness’. Life within us – not just the hope of eternal life yet to come but the joy of a hope realised here and now, in this very moment!

Romans 8 goes on to say, ‘If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you’. The only time we will have a mortal body is here and now which tells me that the Spirit of Life is not a ‘has-been’ experience or a ‘will-be’ experience but an ‘is-now’ experience. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John10).

I think we are all guilty, from time to time, of not truly realising this fullness of life that dwells within us; I know I am. The world around us clambers on top of us with its fear and uncertainty and we allow ourselves to get dragged down into the miry clay. Let us remember that the Lord has drawn you and I up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and set (our) feet upon a rock. He put a new song in (our) mouth, a song of praise to our God (Psa40).

Praise God that He has given us the Spirit of Life, this wonderful, abundant life that flows within these mortal bodies, setting us free to experience the joy and hope that comes from being a child of the King.
