I AM – YHWH – JEHOVAH
Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you’.” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, “The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. (Exodus 3:13)
When you see the name LORD in the Bible, written in capitals, it is the name YHWH. After the destruction of Solomon’s temple, YWHW was only written and no longer spoken (thought to be through fear and reverence) and so was replaced by Adonai.
The root of the name comes from the Hebrew verb ‘to be’. This is God’s personal name, conveying his self-existence, on which He has the authority to be called I AM.
He was, He is, He always will be. He is the Omnipresent God.
Give thanks for what He has done, for what He is doing and for what He will continue to do in your life.
