One Loaf

Mark 8:18

Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?

The disciples were in the boat with Jesus when they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. Actually, they had one loaf between them. Now, let me ask you, if you had witnessed Jesus feeding five thousand people with 5 loaves and 2 fish and then just a short time ago watched him feed four thousand people with 7 loaves and a few small fish, would you really be concerned that 1 loaf wouldn’t feed 13 of you?

What was it that they just couldn’t grasp? Did they maybe feel that the miracles were for the benefit of others but not for them; that somehow their needs were not a factor? Or were they simply fixated on this one moment when they were 12 hungry men with one loaf of bread.

The Lord cuts in on their conversation asking, ‘have you forgotten so quickly; do you still not understand who I am?’. We don’t know how Jesus was feeling when he spoke to the disciples that day. Was He frustrated or was He just sad? He was the Bread of Life; He was everything they would ever need. They were just as important to Him as anyone in the crowd. And yet they still didn’t fully understand this truth.

Are you seeing Him for who He truly is? Are you confident that He will always provide for your needs and that you are important to Him?

In a world of uncertainty, you can be sure of one thing – you belong to Him and His steadfast love and faithfulness toward you never changes.
