Sing Praise, Always

Psalm 147:1

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.

Why is it fitting? Because He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names. He is great and abundant in power; he prepares rain for the earth. He gives the animals their food and prepares a harvest to sustain us.

We praise Him in the midst of our grief and our pain because He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds; He lifts up the humble.

When life is good, thanksgiving flows easily. We lift up our hearts, our hands and our faces to God in adoration and joyful praise for the blessings that He pours out upon us.

When life is hard, thanksgiving ebbs because it is difficult to thank the Lord with a broken heart and when joy is lost. And yet we read, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1Thes5:18). The crucial word here is ‘in’ – give thanks in, not give thanks for.

A song of praise is fitting because He stands beside us in all circumstances with complete knowledge of all that we bear. And more than that… “he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows”. Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God.
