Proverbs 27:19

As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.

If the eyes are the windows of the soul then the mouth is the doorway of the heart. The things that we see and hear create feelings and emotions within our heart. The more intense the emotion is, the more likely we are to verbalise it. Strong feelings can be difficult to rein in and before the brain has had time to check the consequences, the mouth opens the door to the heart and words come tumbling out.

I would like to be able to say, that ‘my words declare the uprightness of my heart’ (Job33:3), but unfortunately, more often than I would like, my words declare the anger/bitterness/agitation of my heart; not at all a pleasing reflection. I need to ask the Lord daily to create in me a clean heart, a heart that reflects His goodness, kindness, patience and love. I want to be able to echo Job in saying ‘I have treasured the words of His mouth more than the purpose of my own heart’.

What do you see when you look at your reflection in the mirror? What do you want others to see when they are in your company? The Lord Jesus taught that a tree is known by its fruit, so what you produce – either in word or in action – reflects the condition of your heart and the source of its influence. Meditate on God’s word and guard your heart with all vigilance so that each day your reflection becomes more Christlike.

Prayer: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
