Guard your Heart

Proverbs 4:20-27

My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart… Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

The only way to keep in check is to listen to what the Word of God is saying and then write that word on the tablet of your heart. The heart dictates our thoughts, feelings and emotions, and what we think and feel usually flows out of our mouth. Jesus himself said, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”. This is why we need to guard it carefully and ensure that it is filled with only those things that bring life.

Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Phil 4:8

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

Distraction is everywhere, subtle and unsubtle. Drop you guard for a minute and the devil will take advantage. Our focus needs to be securely fixed on God alone, staying attentive to His leading and direction.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
