Fruit of the Spirit, Gentleness

Be Prepared

1 Peter 3:15

In your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

We serve a Holy God and our lives should reflect that, through our behaviour and our speech. We belong to Christ and we honour His sacrifice by living His way.

Peter was writing to fellow Christian Jews to encourage them to stand strong in their faith and to trust the Lord in all circumstances. They had been scattered through different regions and countries and were finding it difficult in somewhat hostile environments. They were followers of The Way and as such, came up against a lot of opposition, fear and persecution. They were constantly defending their faith.

Most of us have not experienced persecution but we may have been ridiculed, teased, laughed at, or even been in some hostile situations because of our faith. Standing up for what you believe is not always an easy ride but we should never be afraid to defend it. We can’t all be Scouts but we can all Be Prepared.

Knowing God’s word is the best defence in all circumstances and I would encourage everyone to meditate on it and memorise it. Don’t be afraid of getting tongue-tied, stick to what you know. Some may try to rile you, be argumentative or even get angry but you don’t have to match their emotions. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your interaction. Take a deep breath if necessary and then answer with gentleness and respect; in this way we honour Christ.

So, Be Prepared and always know What you believe and Why you believe it.
